Bank opened its doors on September 18, 1978 in the Little Building, located at 10 West Main Street. At inception, they were a national bank and bank’s name then was Citizens National Bank. They moved to current location at 1100 North Commerce Street in 1979. They reopened the downtown location as a branch of the bank in January 1984. In March 1997, opened trust department and officially became Citizens Bank & Trust Company.

Independent bank locally owned and managed. For most of history they have had a single location. Now, in addition to main branch in Big Timber, Continental branch is the principle financial institution in Harlowton. Primary service area is the three counties where they are located but they have customers both from all across Montana and other states as well.

Citizens Bank has repeatedly demonstrated its resilience and ability to respond to historical and economic challenges, emerging from the Great Depression of the 1930s as well as from more recent economic crises and major industry changes with renewed vitality. In 1946 a group of local businessmen founded Citizens Bank & Trust Co. to provide financial alternatives to the residents and businesses of St. Tammany Parish. Its founders named their bank after the people they intended it to serve. CBT opened its doors with 8 employees and currently has 41 employees. The employees today still use the same standards that were set back in 1946, which is to have a friendly and personal connection with its customers.

The bank began in May of 1888 when five shareholders – A. A. Kendall, W. A. Wilson, Ed McCormick, Husted Agar and T. F. McCarty – incorporated Citizens National Bank. The bank officially opened its door on July 5, 1888. In 1911, it became Citizens State Bank, then in 1930 the bank converted to Citizens National Bank.
